Ah, BehindInfinity is quite fantastic. My personal input is not really that great, but it is PRACTICE! Practice on people's hair and cheap Halloween wigs (even though they will handle a bit differently from a good-quality wig)! I started out with a mess of a Halloween wig for my first wig-cosplay, but now i can cut my own hair fairly well. I actually have not trimmed one of my own nicer wigs yet, though, as I have not had the need. But I did trim my brother's hair for his Honey cosplay for Metrocon a couple years ago. Also, read/watch all the tutorials you can get your hands on! I do so enjoy Katie Blair's Petting Zoo Wigs. |

Ok, srsly: Hair line modification pieces. There are some characters (Axel, Zack Fair) that just look off without the widow's peak or whatever different hairline they have. I have a picture tutorial for how to do this but I don't have it now because my laptop is ded, but I will be posting it soon for discussion/future assistance.
So, this is just me informing you. That I'll be posting that.

Okay, I make this post in the advocation of wig versus natural hair. I've seen a lot of people saying they don't like using wigs for cosplay. So, here we go:
I, once, hated wigs. And then I realized - it is impossible to get that perfect anime hair look with normal hair, most of the time. Like L. L, you can try with real hair, but you will never truly TRULY get that gravity defying POOF to his hair that there is in canon. And it will most definitely not stay in place perfectly for hours and hours and hours and forever like a styled wig will. Also - Sailor Moon. Akio. Abel from Trinity Blood. Cloud Strife. Kira Izuru. Mugen (POOF!). Kairi (Not with accurately colored hair, you can't). Roxas. And, unless you happen to be Robert Plant, Dorian of Eroica. All people you can not do without the assistance of a wig.
The only costumes I won't use a wig for now are short haired characters because its much harder to find good looking short haired wigs. Kyouya I'm going to use my normal hair for next year because I'm cheap and I hate the current wig I had for him last year (though I actually got a lot of compliments on it and a lot of people couldn't tell it wasn't my normal hair) and Zorin I'm getting a wig for and styling short because I refuse to hack my hair off and bleach it again and I REALLY want to do Zorin.
But most of the time, trust me, children, a wig is so worth the money and the potential uncomfortableness (they're really not half as uncomfortable as people think. They only become annoying after you've been wearing it for over five hours and it's starting to be so unsettled on your head that you need to go find a mirror and completely take it off and put it back on to get all your hair back into it). The first thing I notice about someone is the hair and its the same in cosplay. Someone who I respect a lot in cosplay told me 'the most important things that'll catch the eye in a costume is the wig and the weapon.' So, kiddos, wigs are your friends. Learn to love them and they will love you in return. Most of the time.
Unless you have the entire cast of Ocean's Eleven tucked into your Ouran wig -.-

I completely agree with Kyouya-senpai. Wigs are da bomb. They're a little tough for short hair, though (sometimes too much volume), and so I plan on having my hair cut for Kio/Ryuichi (ahh, short hair again will be so refreshing), since I'm thinking Kio's hair will be quite challenging without that natural fluff and flow (if you know what I'm talking about). Also, I sympathize, because that particular wig, though very realistic, is also rather itchy. But I suppose I don't have trouble with the itchiness, and I totally support wigs when they will function in place of natural hair, because they cost the same amount as, if not less than, a haircut, and this is particularly advantageous if you plan to wear the costume more than once, which I like to do. I enjoy the versatility of wigs, too, so sometimes I just wear them casually.

Oh wigs are sooooo neat =O I wear them for Halloween or for parties sometimes or just for random fun. I really want a neon blue one. It think that would be friggin pimp =O

Oh man. Before I axed my Akio Ohtori cosplay, this was going to be the Year of the Ponytail. Konzen Douji (Saiyuki Gaiden) has a nice long blonde ponytail (about 24/24B, the base color for my Tamaki wig), and Akio has a long ponytail/rattail (that doesn't look ratty at all considering it's a stunning lavender color).
For this, I'm planning on buying a base wig that matches the hair on the head, and adding extra long weft additions in the back of the wig (about 1-2" above the nape) to tie up into a 'ponytail'. The great thing about ponytails and such, kids - they look better when you make them in two parts. That is to say, LONG CHARACTER HAIR =/= LONG WIG. Just keep that in mind. This knowledge may save your costume and your checkbook, someday.

Ok, and on Modifying a Hairline, for characters like Axel or Zack Fair or anyone with a widow's peak or non-rounded hairline, here are the options: Either way you start out wefts and something to put the wefts on. After that it's just an issue of application. Here's a tutorial for starting with a huge thing of wefts already together, then gluing the wefts on: mssaturday.deviantart.com/art/How-to-make-a-Widows-Peak-91115839Then you can also sew the wefts on. Either way, you'll be attaching them to the bottom, then pulling them up over the top. Yeah, I figured. Also, I just did the Roxas wig last night =O It was pretty special, but I think it turned out pretty good. I'll post pictures after it's got perfecting touches on it and is on little Charla's head at the con ^_^
